Just over 200 years ago Captain Meriwether Lewis & William Clark, known as the Lewis & Clark Corps of Discovery, explored and mapped unknown places in the American Northwest. Just over 200 years ago, the expedition of Lewis & Clark travelled up the Missouri River along with their guide and interpreter, Sacajawea. Arriving at the headwaters of the Missouri on July 25, 1805, they were the first white men to enter the confluence region, and they named the three rivers (west to east) for President Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of State James Madison, and Treasury Secretary Albert Gallatin. These three rivers flow together to form the Missouri just four miles from the present-day town. Their original campsite is said to be at the present day Headwaters State Park. Less than 100 years later, Three Forks was known as a railroad town with the Sacajawea Hotel being a stopover.
Today, Three Forks has stood the test of time along with the Sacajawea Hotel. Locals refer to the hotel as “The Sac”, and is known as a historic luxury hotel with one of the best steakhouse restaurants in Montana. Also known for the Three Forks Rodeo and street dance is July 17 & 18, 2020. Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park is located 19 miles south and is one of the best.
