Things to Do in Philipsburg, Montana
Philipsburg is an outdoors person’s dream… Fly-fishing, hiking the Pintler Wilderness, ATV riding roads, horseback riding, Georgetown Lake, camping, mountain biking, shopping, and, of course, great food. In the winter, you will enjoy skiing at Discovery Ski Area and ice fishing on Georgetown Lake. The hidden gem is Garnet Ghost Town located just outside of town. There are still some (partially) standing buildings and the remnants of the old mine but it is a wonderful place to enjoy.
Everything downtown is within walking distance – all three blocks – where you can shop, eat, pan for sapphires, and of course, a brewery.

In the 1860’s, Granite County was home to one of the richest silver strikes in the country. In 1996, a replica of an underground silver mine was built in the museum. The simulated mine shaft and drift is realistic and includes a compressor, a hoist house, several ore cars, and various other pieces of mining equipment. The exhibit is intended to give the visitor a glimpse into the daily routine of a turn-of-the-century underground miner in Granite County. In addition to the shaft, the exhibit allows a look inside a miner’s cabin to see how the early prospectors lived, and it allows an observation of a fire assay lab where ore samples were analyzed and processed to determine the mineral and precious metal content.

The road over the pass connects the towns of Hamilton in the Bitterroot Valley and Philipsburg in Flint Creek Valley and remains the only direct route between these two important agricultural areas. Originally an Indian route, Highway 38 was built in 1924 to link mountainous mining areas with the agricultural settlements in the valleys. The route is closed during winter due to heavy snowfall.
