Teepee Creek Trail in Big Sky, Montana

  • Upper teepee looking toward lodgepole

Trailhead: Highway 191 (east side)- 12 miles south of Big Sky
Distance: Teepee Creek in/out 8 miles
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Usage: Foot hiking, equine
Recommendation: Bear Spray

Teepee Creek is located just off Highway 191 along the buffer zone of Yellowstone National Park. This trail is often called Teepee/Daley as you can hike Teepee and hike out Daley Creek with a relative short trail connecting back to the Teepee trailhead. That said, Teepee Creek can take you to Wilson Draw or cross over to Buffalo Horn.

The trail head is easily accessible. The trail runs along Teepee Creek and is a gently climb. you will stay in wide open meadows during this hike. After one mile, you will see a sign for the cutoff to Daley Creek. If you continue on Teepee Creek, your next crossroad is the option of left to Big Horn or right to Daley.

Visually, this is another beautiful hike with open meadows and many wildflowers such as Indian Paint Brush and bluebells to name a few. I do recommend Bear Spray. I was just there (July 2020) on horseback and way able to view three bears. It was so much fun to have the opportunity to view bears for more than a half hour. Honestly, we could have stayed for hours and watched. They were busy feeding and were a meadow away.
