Philipsburg is an outdoors person’s dream… Fly-fishing, hiking the Pintler Wilderness, ATV riding roads, horseback riding, Georgetown Lake, camping, mountain biking, shopping, and, of course, great food. In the winter, you will enjoy skiing at Discovery Ski Area and ice fishing on Georgetown Lake. The hidden gem is Garnet Ghost Town located just outside of town. There are still some (partially) standing buildings and the remnants of the old mine but it is a wonderful place to enjoy.
Everything downtown is within walking distance – all three blocks – where you can shop, eat, pan for sapphires, and of course, a brewery.

[two-thirds]Flint Creek is a great little Montana brown trout stream. Flint Creek flows from Georgetown Lake to its confluence with the Clark Fork River. A small stream which is mainly on private land but there are many bridges and fishing access location for anglers to take advantage of. There are many deep pools and undercut banks that provide cover for the brown trout.
Mainly a brown trout stream but you will find rainbows and cutthroat in the upper section as you get closer to Georgetown Lake. Flint Creek water gets fairly low as the season moves to late summer.[/two-thirds]

[two-thirds]The Granite County Museum and Cultural Center main floor allows visitors to view a continuously evolving display of historical exhibits, including photos, clothing, and other belongings of former residents of Granite County. Downstairs there is a mural of a mining community, complete with an assay office, a bank with a coin collection found beneath a miner’s cabin, and a reconstructed miner’s cabin.
In the 1860’s, Granite County was home to one of the richest silver strikes in the country. In 1996, a replica of an underground silver mine was built in the museum. The simulated mine shaft and drift is realistic and includes a compressor, a hoist house, several ore cars, and various other pieces of mining equipment. The exhibit is intended to give the visitor a glimpse into the daily routine of a turn-of-the-century underground miner in Granite County. In addition to the shaft, the exhibit allows a look inside a miner’s cabin to see how the early prospectors lived, and it allows an observation of a fire assay lab where ore samples were analyzed and processed to determine the mineral and precious metal content. [two-thirds]Granite Ghost Town State Park showcases remnants of this once thriving 1890s silver boomtown that bears stark witness to Montana’s boom-and-bust mining history. Hector Horton first discovered silver in the general area in 1865. In the autumn of 1872 the Granite mine was discovered by a prospector named Holland. The mine was relocated in 1875. This was the richest silver mine on the earth, and it might never have been discovered if a telegram from the east hadn’t been delayed. The miner’s backers thought the venture was hopeless and ordered an end to its operation, but since that message was delayed the miners worked on and the last blast on the last shift uncovered a bonanza, which yielded $40,000,000. [two-thirds]The Skalkaho Scenic Highway is a 54 mile road which is mainly unpaved. You will find the Skalkaho Falls close to the top of the Pass at 7,258 feet (2,212 m) above sea level.
The road over the pass connects the towns of Hamilton in the Bitterroot Valley and Philipsburg in Flint Creek Valley and remains the only direct route between these two important agricultural areas. Originally an Indian route, Highway 38 was built in 1924 to link mountainous mining areas with the agricultural settlements in the valleys. The route is closed during winter due to heavy snowfall.[/two-thirds]

[two-thirds]Discovery Bike Park is a fun, challenging course designed for intermediate and experienced mountain bikers and park riders. The park is located on the backside of Discovery and drops riders approximately 1,050 vertical feet. Features include wall rides, bridges, jumps, logs and drops. The park is professionally maintained to smooth out jarring ruts and washboarding for a true pro-style experience. Inexperienced riders will have an opportunity every Saturday to learn new downhill skills during a 2 hour lesson from 11-1 pm. Please call (406)563-2184 ahead of time so we can plan for staffing.
For those looking for a warm-up, there will be a hill climb for riders to access the park with hair-raising descents and plenty of single track. For riders wanting to power themselves up the mountain, the trail-use-only ticket is just $5 or jump on the Silver Chief Chairlift for $32.
Discovery Bike Park is accessed via Old Sawmill Gulch Road off Montana Highway 1 south of Philipsburg.[/two-thirds]
